| | | | | | What is ALCP? The initials stand for the ‘Assessment of Learner-centred Practices’ which means, in essence, measuring the motivational impact of pedagogy. This is an assessment instrument that uses online questionnaires, as ELLI does. There are two parallel surveys: one for students and one for their teacher. The research identified four aspects of professional practice that significantly improve motivation and achievement: - Promoting positive interpersonal relationships
- Honouring student voice and providing challenge
- Encouraging higher-order thinking and self-regulation
- Adapting to individual differences

A guide to these principles can be downloaded by clicking here. The on-line surveys assess the students’ and the teacher’s perceptions of these practices in the classroom and highlight discrepancies between them. Significant further aspects of teachers’ and students’ beliefs about learners and learning and their perceptions of what is happening in their own classroom, are illuminated by the feedback. These include how ‘controlling’, how ‘autonomy-supportive’ and how ‘self-efficacious’ they are and how well-motivated the students. The teacher receives feedback from an ‘ALCP Mentor’, who could be a trained colleague, who assists self-reflection on the discrepancies between her own and her class’s perceptions and on effective strategies for achieving desired change.
