Drive To The Line

Drive to the Line is The Learning Partnership’s second STEM challenge and as with Race To The Line, is designed for a full Year cohort. This programme is designed to engage all students in Year 8/S2. The resources are organised to support a rotation of classes.

The challenge is focussed on the design and programming of a robotic vehicle. Equipped only with the basics... a shareable, reusable, programmable controller “brain”, some micro-motors and their imaginations, teams of 8 students must decide how to assemble a chassis and complete their vehicle. Lollipop sticks, cardboard, bottle tops and more can be recycled into chassis components and wheels. If the school has the equipment, teams can also explore 3D printing and laser cutting approaches too.

We recommend team sizes of 8 students and core chassis parts will be provided for all the students in the year to take part.

The programming aspects are based on the use of a Micro:bit, which is a very accessible and easy to program device that works well in small student made products.

A class set (5) of the core computing components are included.

NOTE: Most schools will have received large volumes of Micro:bits in the past and these are also compatible with Drive To The Line components.
